PA Officer Critical After Being Shot in Neck

A Philadelphia officer remains in critical condition and on life support, according to police, after being shot in the neck by a man fleeing from a traffic stop Saturday.

A Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, police officer remains in critical condition on life support Monday after being shot in the neck Saturday. Bond for the suspected gunman has been set at $12.2 million.

The 31-year-old officer has been with the department about six years, reported CBS Philadelphia.

Deputy Police Commissioner Frank Vanore said the incidents leading up to the shooting began a little after 7 p.m. when two officers stopped a 2003 Toyota Echo and realized it was unregistered. The suspect believed to have shot the officer, 36-year-old Ramon Rodriguez Vazquez, was the driver.

While officers took inventory of the vehicle, one noticed a gun holster on the floor in the car.

Police said Vazquez fled on foot when he was asked about the holster. While running down the street, he turned and fired three shots — striking the officer — police reported.

Another officer returned fire but did not Vazquez.

He continued to flee, and police say he changed shirts, tried to enter a garage, and then attempted a carjacking but the targeted vehicle drove away. The suspect then found a man sitting on a porch and forced him into a home and held him at gunpoint, according to police.

After a short barricade, Vazquez was taken into custody. Police recovered a firearm in the home and said they believe it was the one used in the shooting.

He is now charged with two counts of attempted murder of a law enforcement officer, aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, gun violations, evading arrest, and additional offenses.
