The NYPD honored some of its bravest officers at a ceremony Tuesday. One of the honorees was Detective Sumit Sulan, who received the department’s Medal of Honor for fatally shooting a career criminal in 2022 after the man had just killed two other officers.

Sulan was a rookie at the time of the shooting. He was promoted to detective for his actions, the New York Post reports.

At Tuesday’s ceremony, he received a standing ovation from fellow officers as NYPD Commissioner Edward Caban placed the medal around his neck for fatally shooting cop killer Lashawn McNeil during a domestic dispute call in Harlem on Jan. 21, 2022.

McNeil, 47, was shot just moments after killing Officer Wilbert Mora and Officer Jason Rivera.

“With Officers Mora and Rivera struck by gunfire, and the perpetrator continuing to advance to commit further violence, Officer Sulan discharged his firearm twice, striking and gravely wounding the perpetrator, preventing further incident,” Caban said at the ceremony at the NYPD Police Academy.
