Suspended Fresno Chief, Former Seattle Chief Apply to Lead Austin Police

Paco Balderrama was placed on paid administrative leave from his role as Fresno police chief earlier this month. The decision came after allegations of Balderrama being involved in an 'inappropriate relationship' came to light.

Fresno, California, Police Chief Paco Balderrama and former Seattle Police Chief Adrian Diaz are among the 32 candidates who have applied to lead the Austin Police Department.

Balderrama was placed on paid administrative leave from his role as Fresno police chief earlier this month.

The decision came after allegations of Balderrama being involved in an 'inappropriate relationship' came to light.

It's unclear when Balderrama applied for the job but the city started taking applications on May 15, three weeks before the allegations of his inappropriate relationship were made public, ABC 30 reports.

Former Seattle Chief Diaz was removed from his post last month and reassigned over allegations of harassment, discrimination, and hostile work environment.

Diaz has denied the allegations.

He told Seattle radio host Jason Rantz that he had an initial interview with the Austin Police Department to become its chief.

Diaz’ name was also on a list of candidates published this week by Austin’s KXAN.

Former Austin Police Chief Joseph Chacon retired last year. The department has since been led  by Interim Chief Robin Henderson who has said she plans to retire and does not want the job.
